GENERAL INFORMATION
SHELL-GUARD is a water-soluble inorganic borate salt containing compound with insecticidal, termiticidal and fungicidal properties.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE
It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

SURFACE PREPARATION
Wood must be clean and bare: free of dirt, wax, and surface finishes. Remove all previous coatings or sealants. Remove mold or mildew prior to applying SHELL-GUARD. Do not apply to frozen wood. Surface temperature must be between 40°F and 90°F.

PREPARATION OF TREATMENT SOLUTION
An aqueous solution is used for treatment. To prepare solution stir an equal amount by volume of SHELL-GUARD into warm clean water. Stir or agitate while adding until SHELL-GUARD is completely dissolved in the water. Use the mixture within 24 hours as settling of concentrate may occur. Mix in separate container; do not mix in spray applicator.

REMEDIAL AND PREVENTIVE TREATMENT
For remedial and preventive control of organisms attacking wood, apply the diluted solution of SHELL-GUARD by brush, spray or dipping until surface is thoroughly wet (1 gal. per 108 sq. ft.). Thoroughly soak cut ends. Application may also be made by drilling and then injecting the solution under pressure into sound wood or until run-off is observed from entry/exit holes of infested wood. Treatment methods as described yield an approximate retention level of .24 lbs. per cubic ft. boric acid equivalent (BAE) in the outer ¾" of the wood. To minimize borate leaching, apply a water resistant sealer AFTER THE SURFACE IS DRY TO THE TOUCH - in low temperature and high humidity locations this may take 1-4 weeks.

CLEAN UP
Clean up tools and equipment with water. Rinse well and allow to dry.

Shell-Guard RTU Application Instructions

A Penetrating Broad Spectrum Wood Preservative for the Protection and Treatment of Wood Against Decay, Termites, Carpenter Ants and Wood Boring Beetles.

• Use Shell-Guard RTU to prevent wood decay and insect damage to all interior and exterior wood.
• Use Shell-Guard RTU to eliminate wood destroying insects and wood decay.

Shell-Guard® RTU is a formulation of boron compounds with additives that allow the active ingredient to penetrate throughout the wood. Shell-Guard RTU offers far greater wood protection than other preservatives that treat only the surface.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
It is violation of Federal Law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling.

Safe Handling Procedures
Spills and over-spray may be cleaned with a damp cloth or absorbed with appropriate materials. When applying this product in confined spaces, it is recommended that ventilation or an exhaust system be provided. If this is impractical, the use of a NIOSH approved respirator designed for protection from organic vapors is recommended.

Surface Preparation
Apply only to bare, dry wood. Remove any previous finishes or water repellents before applying Shell-Guard RTU. Surfaces to be treated should be clean and free of dirt and other contaminates. If the finished appearance is a primary concern, mold and mildew should also be removed prior to application of Shell-Guard RTU. If detergents or cleaners are used to prepare the surface, rinse thoroughly and allow surface to dry prior to application of Shell-Guard RTU.

Coverage
One (1) gallon of Shell-Guard RTU will treat between 150 to 250 square feet of wood surface area (one coat). Actual coverage will vary, depending on the surface texture and porosity of the wood being treated.

Application Instructions
Apply one (1) coat of Shell-Guard RTU to all exposed sides of lumber or plywood. For lumber thicker than one (1) inch, apply a second coat after the first has been absorbed. Wait at least 20 minutes between applications.

Shell-Guard RTU treated exterior wood should not be exposed to rain or snow for at least 24 hours after treatment. If necessary, cover freshly treated exterior wood with a tarp.

Maintenance of Treated Surfaces
Shell-Guard RTU should be applied annually to exterior unfinished bare wood surfaces. For longer protection, exterior surfaces that have been treated with Shell-Guard RTU may be subsequently coated with a water resistant finish such as paint or exterior stain. Interior surfaces do not require coating except in situations involving repeated moisture contact or high humidity, such as shower stalls, bathhouses, saunas, etc. It is important to allow Shell-Guard RTU to completely dry (at least 24 hours) before applying any protective finish. The finish or topcoat should be applied within two (2) weeks of treatment. Although a wide variety of paints and stains have been successfully used over Shell-Guard RTU treated wood, it is always a good idea to coat a small section of treated wood with the finish to be used and check for compatibility prior to complete application.

Cleanup
Use soap and water to clean up tools.

Armor Guard®

Armor-Guard is a water soluble inorganic borate salt with insecticidal, termiticidal and fungicidal properties. Armor-Guard is effective for protection and remedial treatment of wood against wood-destroying organisms, including the target pests listed below. This product can be used for remedial treatment of wood infested with target organisms, for preventative treatment of wood in existing structures (before signs of infestations), or for pre-treatment of wood during construction.

REMEDIAL and PREVENTATIVE TREATMENT. For remedial control of organisms attacking wood, apply 10% aqueous solution of Armor-Guard by brush or spay until surface is thoroughly wet (approximately 5 gallons of solution per 1000 sq.ft.). Application may also be made by drilling and then injecting the solution under pressure into sound wood or until run-off is observed from entry/exit holes of infested wood.

* Alternatively, apply Armor-Guard powder to infested members by drill and injection into galleries or dust generously on wood surfaces and in wall voids at a rate of approximately 0.5 ounces (12-14 grams) per square foot.

PRE-TREATMENT Spray or powder/dust applications of Armor-Guard may also be made to wood during construction. Apply solution to all accessible surfaces of bare wood at a rate of approximately 5 gallons per 1000 sq.ft. Application should be performed after framing and roofing are in place and before insulation and dry wall are installed. Avoid spaying electrical components. Protect treated wood from excessive rain. End-cuts of wood may also be treated by spray or brush methods listed above, or by 5 minute dipping in Armor-Guard treatment solution.

APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

Preparation of Treatment Solution:

10% aqueous solution: To prepare solution, water should be added to the tank to about 80% of the final volume of solution required.  While agitating, add 1.0 pounds of Armor-Guard gradually for each gallon of treating solution required.  Add the remaining water and agitate the solution until the product has dissolved.

15% aqueous solution: Prepare solution as above, but gradually add 1.5 pounds of Armor-Guard for each gallon of treating solution that is required.  Note: this concentrated solution should be used immediately and should not be stored.  Equipment should be cleaned with soap and water, and rinsed after use.

15% foam: Prepare 15% aqueous solution as listed above and add surfactant/foaming agent.  Typically 1-2 ounces of foaming agent added to the 15% aqueous solution will produce a dry foam with the desired expansion ratio of approximately 20 to 1 (approx. 20 gallons of foam per 1 gallon of aqueous solution).  Armor-Guard foam should be of a “dry” consistency that adheres to wood surfaces, so that run-off is minimized.  Since each foam machine can produce different foams, refer to the equipment manufacturer manuals and the surfactant's label for specific instructions.

Application

Armor-Guard may be used as a solution, powder or foam.  Two applications of 10% solution or one application of 15% solution can be typically applied to wood surfaces by brush or spray.  Application of the solution may also be made by drilling and then injecting under pressure into sound wood or the galleries of infested wood.  As foam, Armor-Guard may be applied directly to wood surfaces or injected into insect galleries or wall voids.

Remedial and Preventative Treatment

Solutions - For remedial control of organisms attacking wood or for protection of wood against future infestations two (2) applications of the 10% aqueous solution are normally required.  Alternatively, apply one (1) application of the 15% aqueous solution.  Apply solutions of Armor-Guard by brush or spray until wood surface is thoroughly wet, at a rate of approximately 5 gallons per 1000 square feet of wood surface area.

Application may also be made by drilling and then injecting the solution under pressure into sound wood or until run-off is observed from entry/exit holes of infested wood.

Powder - Alternatively, apply Armor-Guard powder to wood members by drill and injection into galleries or dust generously on wood surfaces.  Armor-Guard powder can also be injected into wall voids such as between studs, block voids, box sill, eaves, attics, soffits, etc.  Apply powder at a rate of approximately 0.5 ounces (12 - 14 grams) per square foot.

Foam - Apply foam so that all accessible wood surfaces are covered with foam.  Where possible, place foam between wood joints or abutting wood surfaces.  In wall voids, inject enough foam to contact wood surfaces of studs in the wall or the target area desired.  Foam can be injected into galleries until run-off is observed from kick holes or entry/exit holes.

PRE-TREATMENT TO WOOD

Do not use as a preventive treatment for new construction in Florida.

Spray, foam or powder/dust applications of Armor-Guard may also be made to wood during construction.  Apply solution to all accessible surfaces of bare wood at a rate of approximately 5 gallons per 1000 square feet of wood surface area.  Application should be performed after framing and roofing are in place and before insulation and dry wall are installed.  Avoid spraying electrical components.  Protect treated wood from excessive rain.  End-cuts of wood may also be treated by the application methods listed above, or by 1 - 5 minute dipping in Armor-Guard treatment solution.

GENERAL INSECT CONTROL

Armor-Guard powder may also be used as a crack and crevice and void treatment for general control of insects such as Roaches, Silverfish, Earwigs, Crickets and Ants.  Armor-Guard 15% aqueous solution may be used as a crack and crevice treatment only.

Dust Armor-Guard powder into wall voids and hiding places such as in cracks and crevices, moist areas, openings around pipes and sinks, under refrigerators, behind baseboards, coffee makers, meter boxes and manholes.  No powder should be visible in living areas after application.  Any powder visible after application must be brushed into cracks and crevices or removed.  Apply only in areas inaccessible to children and pets.  Avoid contamination of feed and foodstuffs.  Do not use in serving areas when food is exposed.

Application of Armor-Guard powder or 15% aqueous solution is limited to crack and crevice treatment only in food areas of food handling establishments.  Apply Armor-Guard powder or a 15% aqueous solution between different elements of construction, between equipment and floors, openings leading to voids and hollow spaces in walls, equipment legs and bases where insects hide.  Care should be taken to avoid depositing the product onto exposed surfaces or introducing the material into the air.  Avoid contamination of food or food processing surfaces.

Applications of this product in the food areas of food-handling establishments other than as a crack and crevice treatment are not permitted.

Cobra Rods™

Cobra Rods

Borate Rods

Cobra™ Rods are a way to spot treat decay prone areas such as log ends that are already coated with a finish.

Once inserted into damp or wet wood the borate / copper complex in Cobra Rods dissolves spreading the active ingredients into areas surrounding the rod. This eliminates active decay fungi and helps prevent rot for 8 to 10 years.

Cobra Rods are 7/16" in diameter are available in either two or four inch lengths. A 1/2" diameter drill bit is used for installation. The installation holes may be plugged with the accompanying plastic plugs or Energy Seal.

A typical six to eight inch round log end will require one 4” long or two 2” long Cobra Rods inserted within 4 inches of the butt end.

Cobra™ Rods are a trademark of Genics Inc., Spruce Grove, Alberta Canada

Cobra™ Rods Instructions

Cobra Rods are effective against some kinds of termites. Cobra Rods are used internally in wood with a permanent or periodical moisture content above the fiber saturation point (30%) for poles, etc. The rate of application for Cobra Rods is dependent upon the volume of wood to be treated. The recommended load is up to 6 oz. Boric Acid per cubic foot of wood depending upon requirements for treatment. The loading should not be less than 2.0 oz. of Boric Acid per cubic foot of wood. Cobra Rods contain 1.45 times equivalent Boric Acid (BAE).

Inspections can be carried out every 5-8 years for Industrial wood and every 8-10 years for commercial wood. If reusable plastic plugs are used new rods may be inserted into existing holes during the re-inspection process and the same plugs tapped back into place. The angle at which the rods are installed should be at 45° for wood placed vertically into the ground. If the wood is decayed sufficiently to be condemned and no reinforcement is mandated, DO NOT install Cobra Rods. Be careful during installation to not cause unacceptable structural damage to the wood during installation of rods.

Cobra Rods are placed into holes drilled in wood at specific high risk locations (such as at the ground line or near joints and exposed end-grain) and are dependant upon moisture in the wood to work. The rods are positioned so that they are dissolved by the moisture in the wood and the desired loadings are distributed throughout the target area. For remedial treatments of existing decay, 6 oz. of Boric Acid Equivalent (BAE) per cubic foot of wood is recommended. For preventive treatments, 2 oz. BAE per cubic foot is sufficient.  When treating exposed ends or joints, Cobra Rods should be installed within six inches of the exposed end or joint.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Genics Cobra Rods are for treatment of pole structures, dimensional lumber (round stock, square stock) or any non-food contact wood. Cobra Rods are recommended for protection against fungal decay and insects. Cobra Rods can be used for all wood species.

To install Cobra Rods, the three step process is as follows:

1.  Drill a hole at ground level (for posts and poles) using a 1/2" spade bit. Start the hole with the drill positioned horizontally. Once the bit is established, raise the drill to aim downward into the post at a 45° angle. Leave enough headroom to accommodate a 1/16" oversize plug.

2.  Place the Cobra Rod into the hole. Never hammer the Cobra Rod during installation.

3.  Insert the plug and push firmly to seat in hole. Hammer in plug until flush with surface.
